In-N-Out Burger operates in ten states, all in the western and southwestern US plus a newer expansion into Tennessee. The family owned chain grows slowly because every restaurant must be close to one of its own distribution centers, which deliver fresh, never frozen beef.

Why In-N-Out is not everywhere
In-N-Out never franchises and never freezes its beef. Every restaurant needs fresh patties delivered from a company owned facility, so the chain only expands within driving distance of its distribution centers. Building a new facility is what made the Tennessee expansion possible. The company also keeps a tight focus on quality, which means slow, careful growth rather than a rush into new states.
A family company
Harry and Esther Snyder opened the first In-N-Out in Baldwin Park, California in 1948. Their granddaughter, Lynsi Snyder, now owns and runs the company, and has said she has no plans to franchise, sell or take it public. The company is headquartered in Irvine, California.
