What Is the Difference Between Fast Food and Fast Casual?

By Aliza, founder and editor of Menu Info. Updated October 2026.

You have probably heard restaurants described as "fast food," "fast casual" or "casual dining" without a clear explanation of what separates them. These labels are used across the restaurant industry to describe how a restaurant serves food, how much it costs and what kind of experience you can expect. Knowing the difference helps you set your budget and choose the right place for the moment.

Fast food (quick service restaurants)

Fast food restaurants, also called quick service restaurants or QSRs, are built for speed and low prices. Menus are standardized so the food tastes the same at every location, and much of the preparation is designed to take only a few minutes. The drive thru is usually the busiest part of the business. Chains like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Taco Bell fit this group. Value menus and app deals are a big part of how these chains compete.

Fast casual restaurants

Fast casual sits between fast food and table service. You still order at a counter or in an app and there is no server, but the food is usually made to order, the ingredients are often positioned as higher quality, and the dining rooms are designed to be more comfortable. Prices are higher than fast food, but lower than a sit-down restaurant.

Chipotle is the classic example, with an assembly line where you choose every ingredient. Panera, Five Guys, Jersey Mike's and Raising Cane's are also often grouped here. Some chains blur the line: Chick-fil-A runs a fast food drive thru model but is known for service closer to fast casual.

Casual dining restaurants

Casual dining means full table service in a relaxed setting. A server takes your order, brings drinks and checks on your table, and the menu usually includes appetizers, entrees, desserts and often alcoholic drinks. Chains like Applebee's, Chili's, Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse belong here. Prices are higher, and you should add a tip of around 18% to 20% when planning your budget. Many casual dining chains now offer value deals that compete with fast casual prices. See our list of sit-down restaurant deals under $15.

Which one is cheaper in the end?

Fast food is usually the cheapest, especially with app deals and value bundles. But the gap has narrowed as fast food prices have risen. A regular fast food combo can now cost close to a fast casual bowl, and a casual dining value meal can cost about the same as a fast casual order once you skip drinks and dessert. When you add a tip at a sit-down restaurant, though, casual dining is almost always the most expensive of the three.

How to choose

  • Short on time or budget: fast food, especially using the chain's app deals.
  • Want something customizable or a bit fresher, without a long wait: fast casual.
  • Celebrating, meeting friends or want to relax: casual dining.
  • Feeding a family: compare family bundles, which often make fast casual and casual dining more affordable. See our family meal deals guide.
